The Sunset Safari: Why Evening is the Best Time to be on the Water in Falmouth Bay

Most visitors to Falmouth who book a sea safari choose a daytime departure. That is entirely understandable. But if you are prepared to head out in the evening, the Sunset Safari offers something that the daytime trips, good as they are, cannot quite match: the Cornish coast in the last hour of light, with the cliff faces catching the low western sun and the water calm after the daytime breeze drops.

The Light

The quality of light in the hour before sunset on the Cornish coast is exceptional. The south-facing coastline around Falmouth and the Helford approaches catches the low sun at an angle that makes the cliff faces, the green of the coastal vegetation, and the surface of the water look genuinely different from how they appear in flat midday light. Wildlife in Lower Light

Several of the species most commonly seen on Falmouth Sea Safari trips are more active as the light drops. Grey seals are crepuscular in their feeding behaviour, becoming more active in the early evening as they begin their overnight hunting pattern. Seabirds returning to roost create movement and activity along the coast that is often more concentrated than during midday. Harbour porpoise, which can be difficult to spot in choppy midday water, are often more visible in the calmer surface conditions of a summer evening.

The flat, calm sea that frequently accompanies summer evenings also makes it significantly easier to spot the fins and surfacing of larger marine animals at distance. Several of our most memorable basking shark and dolphin encounters have been on evening trips.

There is something qualitatively different about being on the water in the evening compared to the daytime. The daytime trips are lively, social, and energising. The evening trip is quieter, more contemplative, and produces a different quality of experience. Passengers who have been on both frequently say the sunset trip stays with them more persistently.

What to Wear for the Evening

Evening temperatures on the water drop faster than daytime temperatures. An evening in July that feels warm ashore becomes genuinely cool on a moving boat as the sun drops. A warm layer and a windproof jacket are essential for the Sunset Safari regardless of how the day has felt. Bring more than you think you need.
