What Dolphins Can You See in Falmouth?
The waters around Falmouth and the wider Cornish coast are home to several dolphin species:
Common Dolphins
The most frequently spotted species on our sea safaris. Recognisable by their distinctive hourglass pattern along their sides, common dolphins often travel in pods and are known for riding the bow waves of boats.
Bottlenose Dolphins
Larger and powerful, bottlenose dolphins are sometimes seen closer to shore. They’re incredibly intelligent and often travel in small family groups.
Risso’s Dolphins
A real treat to see. Risso’s dolphins are larger, with pale scarred bodies and tall dorsal fins. We’ve been lucky enough to see pods of these around Falmouth Bay, sometimes with calves leaping alongside the adults.
When is the Best Time to See Dolphins in Falmouth?
Spring (March – May)
As the water begins to warm and fish stocks increase, dolphins become more active around the Cornish coast. Spring is a fantastic time for wildlife watching in general.
Summer (June – August)
Traditionally one of the best times for dolphin sightings. The calmer seas and longer daylight hours make spotting wildlife easier. Pods are often seen feeding offshore, and summer trips frequently include dolphin encounters.
Autumn (September – November)
A surprisingly strong season for sightings. With fewer boats on the water and good feeding conditions, dolphins can often be seen hunting in Falmouth Bay.
Winter (December – February)
While less predictable, dolphins are still present in winter. Crisp, clear days can offer excellent visibility, and we do regularly see wildlife even during the colder months.
