Family Boat Trips in Falmouth: Which Sea Safari Is Right for Your Children?
Autumn wildlife in Falmouth Bay is one of the best-kept secrets of the Cornish boating year. In October and November the crowds thin out, grey seals are in their pupping season, dolphins are still about and winter seabirds start to arrive. Falmouth Sea Safari is still running trips from Port Pendennis Marina, weather permitting.
Can you still take a boat trip from Falmouth in October and November?
Yes. Falmouth Sea Safari’s 2026 season carries on through October and November, with trips sailing whenever the weather and sea state allow. The skipper makes the call on the day and will be in touch if a trip needs to move, and the booking page shows which trips are available.
Is it seal pupping season in Cornwall in autumn?
Yes. Grey seals in Cornwall give birth in autumn, and Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Cornwall Marine and Coastal Code guidelines say mothers with pups are most likely to be around from September to November. Pups are born with a white coat and spend their first weeks on quiet beaches and in sea caves.
Adult grey seals are a regular sight on the Wildlife Sea Safari route past St Anthony’s Lighthouse and Gul Rock, hauled out on the rocks or resting upright in the water. Our guide to where to see seals in Cornwall covers the year-round picture.
Are there still dolphins in Falmouth Bay in October and November?
Dolphins can still be seen off Falmouth in autumn. Cornwall Wildlife Trust notes that common dolphins are seen around the Cornish coast all year round. The South West is also home to a resident group of around 28 bottlenose dolphins, which the Trust believes is the only resident pod of its kind in England, and harbour porpoises feed close to shore in shallow water.
Nobody can promise a sighting, because dolphins go where the fish go. A longer trip gives you more time and more sea to cover, which is why the two-hour Wildlife Sea Safari is the best choice if dolphins are top of your list.
Which seabirds can you see off Falmouth in autumn?
Autumn is when the bird life changes over. Falmouth Bay to St Austell Bay is a Special Protection Area, designated for its wintering great northern divers, black-throated divers and Slavonian grebes. Natural England’s 2021 aerial survey estimated a peak of 395 great northern divers in the area.
Closer to the cliffs, look for shags, cormorants, great black-backed and herring gulls, razorbills and guillemots. Our guide to the seabirds of Falmouth Bay has more on telling them apart.
Why is autumn a good time for a sea safari?
The low autumn sun makes Pendennis Castle, St Mawes Castle and the cliffs towards St Anthony Head glow, giving photographers softer light than in midsummer. The water is quieter too. School holidays are our busiest time, so outside October half term there are fewer boats about and more room to watch wildlife.
What should you wear on an autumn boat trip?
Dress for a cold, breezy day, even if it feels mild on the quay. A RIB is open to the weather, so bring warm layers, a waterproof jacket, a hat, gloves and sunglasses for the low sun. Our guide on what to wear and bring has a full checklist.
How do you watch seals and dolphins without disturbing them?
Good wildlife watching lets the animals decide how close they come. The Cornwall Marine and Coastal Code asks boats to slow down when wildlife is seen, approach side on rather than head on, keep engine noise steady and never split up a group. For dolphins it sets a speed below 6 knots and a limit of 15 minutes with the animals. Our skippers follow these guidelines and the WiSe (Wildlife Safe) scheme, the UK’s national training scheme for watching marine wildlife [confirm with client].
If you are walking the coast this autumn, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary advises staying at least 100 metres from seal pups, keeping dogs on a lead and never moving a pup. A lone pup is usually not abandoned. If one looks injured, call British Divers Marine Life Rescue on 01825 765546.
